Artist's Comments

When work was started on Nelson's Column in 1840, Queen Victoria ordered that an elaborate and massive cannon be secretly constructed inside the mock marble facade. Should Britain ever be in dire need, the state-of-the-art steam powered mechanism can open the column and fire the explosive tipped statue of Lord Nelson a distance of 100 miles.

Apparently. Thats what I heard at least.

But the cannon is at 90 degrees relative to the surface, so that would make it a weapon of selfdestruction.....
Queen Vic (that's what we good friends of colonial royalty call her) was a dumb lass....

....But still liking the detail and admiring the effort....
